Si2167 Block Diagram

The Si2167 multimedia TV demodulator IC is the industry’s first and smallest digital TV demodulator that combines satellite, terrestrial and cable digital-video broadcast (DVB) functions in one highly integrated device. The Si2167 provides a single-chip, multi-standard solution that helps simplify the design of complex video front-ends now common in iDTV and STB designs.

The Si2167 IC integrates DVB-T, DVB-C, DVB-S and DVB-S2 (and legacy DSS) digital demodulators into a single CMOS chip for terrestrial, cable, and satellite TV standards. Leveraging Silicon Labs' proven digital demodulation architecture, the Si2167 achieves excellent reception performance for each media while minimizing front-end design complexity and cost. Connecting the Si2167 to a terrestrial and cable hybrid TV tuner, such as Silicon Labs’ Si217x, results in a high-performance and cost-optimized TV front-end receiver for PAL/SECAM and DVB-T/C.

Features

  • DVB-S/S2 (ETSI EN 302 307 & TR102-376) compliant QPSK/8PSK demodulator & LDPC + BCH FEC decoder  (Broadcast profile  – S.R. from 1 to 45 MBaud)
  • Legacy DSS standard compliant
  • DiSEqC™ 2.0 interface
  • DVB-T compliant COFDM demodulator & FEC decoder (Supports all C.R., G.I., LP, and HP streams)

  • NorDig Unified 2.1, D-Book 6.1 & C-Book compliant
  • Three ADCs with independent IF and ZIF inputs (differential) for terrestrial/cable and satellite
  • Four independent AGC controls (for IF & RF), and RSSI measurement
  • I2C Host and tuner ports
  • Power dissipation from 190 to 860 mW max.
    (reception mode dependant)
  • Only two power supplies (1.2 & 3.3 V)
  • 7 mm x 7 mm, 48-pin QFN package

Applications

  • Full-NIM
  • iDTV (integrated Digital TV)
  • Digital terrestrial, cable, and satellite STB
  • PC-TV accessories

The analog front-end consists of three independent ADCs with wide dynamic range to allow operation with standard IF (~36 MHz), low-IF, or zero-IF inputs (for satellite only). This enables the use of the Si2167 with any kind of tuner, either metal can or silicon tuner based. The multimedia demodulator supports the DVB-S2 Broadcast profile (1 to 45MBaud, CCM, 64800bits frame, single TS) as well as all DVB-T modes (also hierarchical modes, 4 K FFT, “native” and “in-depth” deinterleavers and extended TPS) and 16/32/64/128/256 QAM in DVB-C for Annex A/C (including low symbol rates). Special features are provided to offer the most efficient scanning algorithms for the three media. An unified and simpler control software can be developed for the end-equipment thanks to the single-chip multi-DVB demodulator concept.

The Si2167 IC enables a low-cost system implementation due to its minimal BOM and very small package footprint (7 mm x 7 mm, 48-pin QFN). Benefiting from its compact form factor and reduced power dissipation in DVB-S2, it is ideal for module (NIM) integration or on-board design.

Designing Wheel-Tuned, Digital-Display Radios with Next-Generation Radio ICs

As a growing number of portable applications such as mobile phones and portable media players integrate the FM radio function, there’s a misconception that traditional radios are no longer needed. In reality, wheel-tuned radios have remained immensely popular. This article will discuss how to design a mid-level wheel-tuned radio with an LCD to display frequencies, and it will explore the practical considerations in selecting audio ICs and display drivers, as well as how to leverage these technologies to deliver the best end-user radio tuning experience.
