Si3460 Single Port PoE PSE Controller with dc-dc

The Si3460 is the industry’s first dual-function, single-port Power over Ethernet (PoE) controller with an integrated dc-dc controller for power sourcing equipment (PSE). By combining these two functions, the Si3460 dramatically simplifies development efforts, reduces system costs and eliminates specification compliance challenges for designers of a broad range of emerging PoE applications such as in-home gateways, set-top boxes, cable modems, DSL modems and Voice over IP systems.

The Si3460 is IEEE 802.3af compliant and is designed to minimize system cost and ease of implementation in embedded PSE endpoint (switches) or midspan (power injector) applications. The Si3460 operates directly from an 11 to 16 V input supply and integrates a digital PWM-based dc-dc controller for generating a nominal –48 V PSE output supply. The negative polarity of the PSE output supply conveniently provides Safety Extra Low Voltage (SELV) operating compatibility with telephony interfaces often featured in embedded PSE endpoint applications such as home gateways.

The IEEE-required Powered Device (PD) detection feature uses a robust 3-point algorithm to avoid false detection events. The Si3460 controlers' reference design kit also provides full IEEE-compliant classification and PD disconnect. Intelligent protection circuitry includes input undervoltage lockout (UVLO), current limiting and output short-circuit protection.

The Si3460 is designed to operate completely independently of host processor control. An LED status signal is provided to indicate the port status including detect, power good and output fault event information for use within the host system. The Si3460 is pin-configurable to support endpoint and midspan applications, as well as all four classification power levels specified by the IEEE 802.3af standard, including Class 0 (15.4 W maximum power).

A comprehensive reference design kit is available (Si3460-EVB) includes a complete schematic and bill-of-materials (BOM) for the dc-dc controller and PSE functions.
