This reference design and evaluation kit includes an Si3452MS8 evaluation board which functions as a complete 8-port midspan. The Si3452MS8 serves as a convenient “Ethernet chipset independent” midspan platform with GUI for evaluating the Si3452 PSE controller, as well as the sophisticated power management functionality enabled by the Si3452’s Software Development Kit (SDK).
The system features two Si3452 PSE controllers, an Si8405 I2C Isolator, and an Si3500 high voltage dc-dc converter to power the complete PSE subsystem.The Si3452MS8 kit has been thoroughly tested for IEEE standards compliance and interoperability.Test reports are included in the kit.
Hardware and GUI Overview
The reference design GUI enables designers to easily configure, control and monitor the evaluation system via an I2C (SMBus) interface connected to a host PC. A graphical user interface (GUI) is included, providing an easy-to-use visual display and control of the Si3452’s register set. The user is expected to provide an appropriate, high-voltage power supply to fit the target application requirements. The power supply should be 45 to 57 V for PoE (IEEE 802.3af) or 51 to 57 V for PoE+ (IEEE 802.3at). Since the Si3452 can supply over 30 W to each port, the two Si3452 controllers in the Si3452MS8 system can deliver over 240 W of total power.
