What is the Solution?
The Busy Bee 3 Power Delivery (PD) controller is an 8051 MCU that uses its rich peripheral set to send and receive USB Type-C power delivery messages. Along with Type-C functions like orientation detection the Busy Bee 3 PD controller has GPIOs, UART, I2C, ADC, and other peripherals available that allow it to also control regulators, LEDs, power ICs, and more. The powerful core and peripheral set give unrivaled flexibility in Type-C designs. The software that enables Power Delivery functionality is available for free in Simplicity Studio and can be used as is or modified to meet specific application requirements.
The EFM8 BB3 PD controller uses its dense peripheral set for power delivery capabilities. However, the rest of the MCU is left to the developer. The greyed out blocks in the diagram point to the peripherals being used by the PD stack. Some are fully utilized like the voltage DACs while others are partially used like memory and IOs.
