Thread Border Router Reference Design

A Thread Border Router is a key component of a Thread protocol-based system and is responsible for key functions including:

  • Commissioning end devices or nodes
  • Bridging Thread networks to the Internet and other IP-based networks and end-points
  • Connecting external devices such as mobile phones to the Thread-based Home Area Network (HAN)

Both commissioning of end nodes and the authentication of external devices are performed as a secure transaction. Once authenticated, devices such as mobile phones can communicate into the Thread-based HAN using individual device IPv6 addresses.

Silicon Labs Thread Border Router reference design is based on off-the-shelf hardware components including the Raspberry Pi 2 Model B. The border router includes wireless support for Wi-Fi®, Ethernet and Thread. Sample code built on the Linux®-based Raspbian operating system will be available for download as well as a cross-platform server virtual machine for Windows, Mac and Linux that provides support for device binding, device management and data visualization on remote web browsers.

Silicon Labs Border Router Reference Design requires the EM35X-DEV Development Kit or EFR32 Mightly Gecko Kit for Thread development.
