The Si84xx isolator family is targeted toward moderate noise environment applications where cost, integration, reliability and stability over operating temperature are important factors. This family offers certified isolation ratings of 2.5 kVrms and 5.0 kVrms, and device configurations from one to six channels in forward and reverse data flow directions. Industry-leading transmission rates (150 kbps max), high reliability (TDDB > 60 years) and stability over operating temperature from -40 to +125 ºC make the Si84xx favored over optocouplers and competing silicon isolator solutions.
Silicon Labs' digital isolator consists of two identical CMOS die that form a high frequency transmitter and receiver separated by a capacitive differential isolation barrier when connected together. A logic high on the isolator channel input transmits a carrier to the receiver, driving the channel output to logic high. Conversely, a logic low on the input inhibits the carrier, driving the channel output to logic low.
High noise application environments should use the Si86xx
pin-compatible digital isolator series which is noise-hardened for more robust operation. Table 1 summarizes the key differences between the Si84xx, Si86xx and Si87xx digital isolator families, while Table 2 shows the available Si84xx and Si86xx configurations.
