M68/M64 IEEE 1588 Modules 

(Master, Slave, Boundary Clock)

The M68/M64 IEEE 1588 modules are designed for applications that require distribution of frequency and phase synchronization from edge nodes, such as a Carrier Ethernet demarcation point or macro base station that is aggregating traffic from small cells. The M6x series can also be used to build Time Servers or Edge Grandmaster clocks to synchronize a small cell cluster.

The M6x series consists of two members – the M64 and the M68. The M64 provides PTP ordinary clock operation, operation, allowing it to act as a PTP master or slave. The M68 enhances this by adding a gateway clock capability. The M68 can operate as a traditional two-port boundary clock but, in addition, can accept a timing reference from a local GNSS receiver to allow combined PTP and GNSS operation.

Design & Integration

The M6x series modules provide dual Ethernet ports capable of supporting operation up to one gigabit per second and with wire-speed traffic pass through. This means that the M64 or M68 can be inserted into an existing traffic link without disrupting the traffic flow.

For rapid ‘turnkey’ integration, the P60 IEEE 1588 Prototyping Board provides an M68 mounted on a ready-to-use carrier board with all the necessary external interfaces available on various connectors.

Advanced Time Recovery Algorithms

The M6x series of modules has industry leading algorithms that enable it to extract precise time from a remote master over a real-world network in which the timing packets experience packet delay variation (PDV) caused by multiple switches handling interacting traffic flows

.In addition, the M68/M64 series has cutting edge patented technology that allows simultaneous operation with both PTP and a local GNSS-based source of time. The ability to use multiple synchronization inputs is particularly powerful in today’s applications, where a host system may need to be versatile and deployable in diverse environments.
