Si217x Block Diagram

The Si21x6 silicon tuner IC family includes five devices: a ¾ NIM hybrid TV tuner IC for analog and digital transmission standards and an integrated analog TV demodulator, two half-NIM TV tuner ICs for analog and digital reception, a digital-only TV tuner IC and a complete analog TV tuner IC with demodulator. These devices are fully compliant with all worldwide terrestrial and cable TV transmission standards. The Silicon Labs’ patented low-IF tuner architecture has been enhanced through three generations to tackle the many real-world non-standard terrestrial and cable broadcasts. No external LNAs, tracking filters or SAW filters are needed, which saves board space and cost.

The Si21x6 silicon TV tuner IC family exceeds the performance of traditional discrete tuner implementations, delivering superior picture quality and a higher number of received stations in real-world reception conditions. Offering superior linearity and fully integrated high-quality tracking filter inductors, Silicon Labs’ next-generation TV tuner ICs deliver the industry’s highest immunity against blocker interference, resulting in the ability to receive the highest number of analog and digital channels in urban settings. The IC’s RF front-end also offers excellent sensitivity performance and consistently tunes distant transmitters in non-urban settings.

The Si21x6 silicon tuner IC family integrates the complete signal path from the RF input to the IF or analog video and sound outputs. Compared to traditional discrete tuner implementations, over one hundred external components are eliminated including external LNAs, tracking filter inductors, discrete varactors and surface acoustic wave (SAW) filters resulting in the simplest, lowest-cost BOM for a hybrid tuner. The Si21x6 TV tuner family further reduces cost with a smaller package, smaller PCB and lower-cost external components.

The Si21x6 silicon tuner IC family seamlessly interfaces with the Si2165 DVB-T/C and Si2167 DVB-T/C/S/S2 demodulators creating complete terrestrial and cable hybrid PAL/SECAM and DVB format receivers.

The radio components used in today's vehicles need to be cost-effective while meeting rigorous automotive levels of performance. With the advent of multi-tuner automotive infotainment systems, car radio developers must now consider a wide range of performance requirements and new technologies in their designs.

Designing Wheel-Tuned, Digital-Display Radios with Next-Generation Radio ICs

As a growing number of portable applications such as mobile phones and portable media players integrate the FM radio function, there’s a misconception that traditional radios are no longer needed. In reality, wheel-tuned radios have remained immensely popular. This article will discuss how to design a mid-level wheel-tuned radio with an LCD to display frequencies, and it will explore the practical considerations in selecting audio ICs and display drivers, as well as how to leverage these technologies to deliver the best end-user radio tuning experience. Available in English and Simplified Chinese.
