Environmental Sensors

Sensors have historically been manufactured on glass or ceramic substrates, using specialist materials and manufacturing processes. Silicon Labs’ proprietary, patented technology enables sensors, signal conditioning circuits and RF transceiver functions, together with the microcontroller and memory, to be integrated on a single chip, fabricated entirely from standard CMOS.

Silicon Labs is leveraging this technology to create a family of high performance, small footprint and cost effective humidity and temperature sensors.

Patented Innovation

The Low-K dielectrics in Deep Submicron CMOS are porous oxides and polymers that sensors have been using for decades. Silicon Labs' breakthrough is to re-use these porous oxides and polymers as sensors and place 18-bit A/D converters on the very same chip underneath the sensors. This approach enables sensing of tiny changes of conductivity and/or dielectric-constant in response to humidity and various gases, which can be selectively admited or blocked, according to our patented design and layout techniques.
