How can I obtain a unique PID for my USB product?
Each USB device on a single USB bus must have a unique Vendor ID (VID), Product ID (PID), and Serial Number combination.
Details about obtaining a unique VID for your company can be found at the USB-IF website: http://www.usb.org/developers/vendor. The default Silicon Laboratories VID may be used only on Silicon Labs USB devices.
If you wish to use the default Silicon Laboratories VID, we strongly recommend obtaining a unique PID for your product.
To obtain a unique PID, fill out the form that is linked from the URL:
This information is for the Silicon Labs internal PID allocation database only.
Programming the VID and PID in the CP210x Device:
Application Note AN721 "AN721: USBXpress™ Device Configuration and Programming Guide" shows how to customize a CP210x device using Xpress configurator tool in Simplicity Studio.
The VID and PID can be programmed in the firmware for a non-CP210x device.
Creating a Driver with the New VID and PID:
The AN220 'USB Driver Customization' guide and software will generate a Direct Access Driver or VCP driver with the appropriate VID and PID.
For the USB examples (USB Bulk, USB Interrupt, etc), the VID and PID can be changed in the INF files associated with the driver.
