Si475x Block Diagram

The Si475x AM/FM receiver family is the most integrated high performance automotive grade radio receiver solution available for entry/mid-level car radios and infotainment head-units.

The Si475x AM/FM tuner family offers a fully integrated LW/AM/SW/FM tuner in a 100% CMOS integrated circuit.  It provides a fully integrated radio tuner solution from antenna input to audio output for use as the primary broadcast radio tuner for automotive radios. The Si475x product portfolio of tuners supports worldwide broadcast radio bands including AM/FM, college FM radio bands down to 64 MHz, longwave, shortwave, and, FM RDS. The entire portfolio is layout and software compatible and is offered in a compact 5 mm x 5 mm x 0.85 mm 32-pin QFN package.

The Si475x family implements Silicon Labs' proven and globally patented digital low intermediate frequency (low-IF) tuner architecture. Silicon Labs has shipped over 800 million broadcast audio tuners worldwide into many different radio applications using this architecture. The digital low-IF architecture delivers excellent performance whilst integrating the majority of external components and eliminating manual alignment required by competing solutions.

The Si475x products are feature-rich solutions, providing excellent performance with Silicon Labs' recommended default settings, coupled with extensive flexibility to customize audio and system performance according to customer’s preferences. Programmable algorithms include advanced seek with multiple signal qualifiers and thresholds in all supported bands and a comprehensive suite of weak signal processing engines including FM stereo-mono blend with programmable rates and thresholds, soft mute, AM/FM noise impulse blankers, dynamic AM/FM channel bandwidth control, dynamic AM/FM hi-cut audio filtering, FM hi-blend audio filtering, and AM lo-cut filtering for 50/60Hz power line suppression.

The Si475x generates all internal clocking from an external crystal using an on-chip oscillator, or an external programmable reference clock. The supported crystal and external clock source frequency is 4 MHz. The IC provides audio output in standard line-level analog audio using high fidelity stereo DACs. FM MPX analog output is provided for interface to third party VICS decoders for the Japanese market.

All odd numbered Si475x parts offer a fully-integrated preprocessor for the European Radio Data System and the North American Radio Broadcast Data System (RDS). The RDS preprocessor includes all symbol decoding, advanced error-correction, detailed visibility to block-error rates (BLER), synchronization status and times, and complete, decoded and error-corrected RDS group data.

Key Requirements for Multi-Tuner Automotive Radio Designs

Automotive OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers understand that consumers expect a superior in-vehicle audio experience and are responding by designing sophisticated infotainment systems. The radio components used in today's vehicles need to be cost-effective while meeting rigorous automotive levels of performance. With the advent of multi-tuner automotive infotainment systems, car radio developers must now consider a wide range of performance requirements and new technologies in their designs.

Designing Wheel-Tuned, Digital-Display Radios with Next-Generation Radio ICs

As a growing number of portable applications such as mobile phones and portable media players integrate the FM radio function, there’s a misconception that traditional radios are no longer needed. In reality, wheel-tuned radios have remained immensely popular. This article will discuss how to design a mid-level wheel-tuned radio with an LCD to display frequencies, and it will explore the practical considerations in selecting audio ICs and display drivers, as well as how to leverage these technologies to deliver the best end-user radio tuning experience.
