RF-to-USB Reference Design

To help demonstrate the low power and small form factor benefits offered by Silicon Labs, we now offer a two-board RF-to-USB2 reference design that wirelessly streams data from a transmit board to a computer via a USB dongle. This reference design demonstrates our sub-gigahertz, USB and low power technologies that can be useful in many industry applications like medical, metering, automotive, security and home automation.

The RF-to-USB2 Reference Design kit includes:

To demonstrate the low power operation of this reference design, the transmit node ships with a single AAA battery attached and no on/off switch. During periods of inactivity, the Si1014 Wireless MCU-based node boards is in sleep mode yet constantly monitoring the state of the transmit button. Upon an assertion of the transmit button the Si1014 performs the following actions:

  • Wakes up digital and analog circuitry in less than 2 µS
  • Measures an external potentiometer via the ADC
  • Makes a temperature reading via the integrated temp sensor
  • Transmits the data to the USB dongle
  • Quickly puts the system to sleep

As a development tool, the kit included two user-programmable wireless sensor nodes, a programming adapter and example code. This enables rapid prototyping of a user application on a realistic hardware platform. Design files and example code make adding wireless functionality to products simple.
