Expanding the Reach of Thread with Sub-GHz
Silicon Labs is excited to support the Thread Group’s initiative to extend Thread into the Sub-GHz spectrum.
For commercial and industrial IoT, Sub-GHz connectivity has long delivered the range, building penetration, and energy efficiency needed to connect devices across large and challenging environments. Yet the market remains fragmented, with many deployments relying on proprietary approaches that can limit interoperability and ecosystem choice.
Bringing Thread’s open, IP-based mesh architecture to Sub-GHz creates a compelling opportunity to address that gap. It can give developers a standards-based foundation for building secure, reliable, low-power mesh networks in applications such as building automation, smart metering, lighting retrofits, healthcare facilities, and industrial sensor networks.
Silicon Labs is well positioned to help make that opportunity real. We bring leadership in IEEE 802.15.4-based mesh technologies, a broad Sub-GHz portfolio, and deep experience enabling secure, interoperable IoT products. Our EFR32FG28 Sub-GHz SoC is one example: its dual-band architecture combines a high-performance Sub-GHz radio with Bluetooth Low Energy, giving developers flexibility to address long-range network connectivity alongside local commissioning, diagnostics, or user interaction. That flexibility matters. Customers should not have to choose between the reach and robustness of Sub-GHz and the usability benefits of Bluetooth.
As the Sub-GHz Thread specification takes shape, a strong hardware platform and broad ecosystem support will be essential to helping developers bring products to market quickly and confidently.
We look forward to contributing our expertise to the Thread Group’s collaborative specification effort. Together with the broader ecosystem, we see an opportunity to give customers a world-class, open-standards solution for the next generation of commercial and industrial IoT.
