      1. Software and Tools

      Proprietary Software Development

The Flex SDK is a complete software development suite for proprietary wireless applications that provides two paths for development. The first path begins with Silicon Labs RAIL (Radio Abstraction Interface Layer), which is an intuitive and easily-customizable radio interface layer designed to support proprietary or standards-based wireless protocols. The second path uses Silicon Labs Connect, an IEEE 802.15.4-based networking stack designed for creating easily customizable broad-based proprietary wireless networking solutions optimized for devices that require low power consumption for both sub-GHz and 2.4 GHz frequency bands and targeted for simple network topologies. The Flex SDK includes extensive documentation and sample applications, the popular range test, functionality for lab evaluation, wake-on-radio as well as bi-directional packet transmission and reception. All these examples are provided in source code within the Flex SDK sample applications. Using the supporting Simplicity Studio tools suite, developers can take advantage of the graphical user interface to quickly generate wireless applications, perform energy profiling and various system optimizations.

RAIL (Radio Abstraction Interface Layer)   Silicon Labs’ RAIL (Radio Abstraction Interface Layer) lets you adopt the latest RF technology without sacrificing the investment you’ve made in your wireless protocol. Designed to support proprietary or standards-based protocols, RAIL simplifies and future-proofs the migration of code to new ICs.
Connect Stack   Silicon Labs’ Connect is an IEEE 802.15.4 based wireless networking stack for broad-based proprietary applications and is optimized for devices that require low power consumption. This full-featured, easily customizable networking stack is designed for compliance with regulatory specifications across worldwide geographic regions and supports both sub-GHz and 2.4 GHz frequency bands.

      1. Learn About Proprietary

      Proprietary Wireless

When a standard protocol does not fit your use case, or when your design has unique requirements, proprietary wireless networks can be the right solution. With proprietary protocols, you can design specifically for your use case, thus reducing memory and processing requirements and resulting in lower power and lower development cost. Additionally, proprietary networks are naturally more secure than other standards-based protocols due to the hidden nature of the of data rates, modulation, and packet structure. These parameters are more widely known for standard protocol networks, making them more vulnerable to security threats.

      Proprietary Sub-GHz Band

Advantage of using sub-GHz frequencies in your designs is longer range. Sub-GHz radio waves can easily pass-through walls and other obstacles and can bend around buildings with much lower attenuation. Sub-GHz frequencies also have less interference than the 2.4 GHz band, which is crowded with signals from other sources such as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth devices.

      Proprietary 2.4 GHz Band

A proprietary 2.4-GHz network allows you to customize wireless application layer protocol and operates on a license free band around the world which means you can deploy your application at a lower cost. Best suits for custom wireless protocol applications and interoperability with legacy 2.4-GHz wireless protocol application.
