USB Type-C Rechargeable Battery Pack Dual Role Port Reference Design



The USB Type-C Rechargeable Battery Pack Dual Role Port Reference Design adds two way power to your USB Type-C design. The design is able to negotiate via Type-C Power Delivery to send or receive power. It features connections for a lithium ion battery and a USB Type-C receptacle. It uses the EFM8 Busy Bee 3 as a Power Delivery controller. It features boost and buck regulators to control the power coming from the battery or into the battery and is able to source up to 15W with 5V at 3A and sink up to 9W with 5V at 1.8A. It contains status LEDs to indicate the state and a mode button to force the design to switch roles. The design can be used as a drop in solution for rechargeable battery packs or slightly modified to control other regulators, switches, LEDs, and more. By using an 8051 MCU as a PD controller the developer has immense flexibility to tweak the reference design in many ways. It can be used with an I2C controlled regulator or have the MCUs GPIOs control other components.

Silicon Labs offers free USB Type-C PD libraries and a kernel to assist in building solutions. The library offers simple function calls to send PD commands, detect orientation, transition to a sink/source, and more. The kernel assists with scheduling the PD communication as to not miss or fail to reply to a message.
