Matter 1.5: Powering the Next Generation of Smart Homes
The Future Is More Connected Than Ever with Matter 1.5
The newly released Matter 1.5 specification marks another milestone in the evolution of the smart home ecosystem. This update includes much-anticipated support for cameras, while also introducing updated features and device types for closures, soil sensors, and advanced energy management.
With this release, Matter continues its goal of unifying the fragmented smart home landscape, enabling seamless interoperability between devices from different brands so that your smart home just works.
Notable Features in Matter 1.5
Cameras: Smarter Vision for Smarter Homes
Matter 1.5 introduces smart camera support, one of the most requested additions. Now, smart cameras can stream and record securely using Matter’s unified standard.
Key capabilities:
- Live streaming and optional recording
- Two-way talk and multi-stream support
- Pan, tilt, and zoom functions
- Event-based or continuous local/cloud recording
While smart cameras are widely deployed in homes, they are often ecosystem-specific. This requires the end user to rely on multiple apps. With Matter, they can now use smart cameras from different vendors, but control them on their Matter app or ecosystem of choice, enabling a more seamless experience for consumers.
Energy Management: Smarter, Greener Living
Matter 1.5 integrates energy pricing, tariffs, and grid carbon intensity into its data model. Devices can now exchange standardized energy data, paving the way for intelligent automation. This makes it possible for devices like solar, electric vehicles (EVs), and other energy consuming devices to optimize when they run. For example, users can charge their EVs when pricing is lowest or solar energy is abundant.
Closures: Smarter Windows, Doors, and Shades
The new Closures Cluster standardizes control for doors, windows, shades, gates, and garage doors. It provides precise, interoperable motion and position control. This improvement provides a consistent user experience across brands and enables advanced features available through Matter.
Imagine the flexibility and convenience of a smart home automatically closing shades at sunset and locking the garage upon departure across any ecosystem.
Water & Garden Management: Soil Sensors Take Root
With Soil Sensor support, Matter 1.5 extends its reach outdoors. These sensors monitor soil moisture (and, optionally, temperature), supporting automations with smart sprinklers and water valves..
Gardening meets automation so plants get just enough water, conserving resources and ensuring optimal growth.
Matter 1.5 has TCP and Large Message Support
Matter 1.5 adds TCP transport capability, allowing faster data transmission and support for large payloads such as images and firmware updates. This is ideal for enabling faster data-heavy use cases like video streaming.
