Silicon Labs Upgrades Zephyr Project Membership to Platinum

Silicon Labs has upgraded its membership in the Zephyr® Project to Platinum, a milestone that reflects our deep, long-term commitment to open source and to the developers building secure, connected devices on resource-constrained hardware.

Zephyr has grown into one of the most vibrant embedded communities in the world, powering products across industrial, smart home, wearables, and more. Moving to Platinum is our way of prioritizing investment into the future we’re building together, one where open standards and open source accelerate time to market without compromising quality or security.

Why Zephyr Project Platinum and Why Now?

Upgrading our membership makes it possible for Silicon Labs to take a larger leadership role in the project’s direction while increasing our engineering contributions upstream. In practice, this means greater alignment between Zephyr’s roadmap and the capabilities of our wireless portfolio. It also means we’ll continue to expand first-class support for key connectivity stacks including Bluetooth® Low Energy and Wi-Fi, so teams can prototype quickly and ship confidently on Zephyr, which will run parallel with Silicon Labs’ own SiSDK supporting Silicon Labs modules and SoCs.

Just as important, this step underscores our commitment to the things developers care about most: stability, security, and maintainability. We will keep contributing to automated testing, documentation, and long-term support initiatives that help Zephyr scale from evaluation boards to products on shelves. When upstream improves, everyone benefits from fewer forks, fewer patches to carry, and a faster path from idea to device. Silicon Labs will also provide downstream support, giving developers a faster, more integrated, and more reliable path to building IoT products.

What Silicon Labs’ Zephyr Project Commitment Means for Developers

  • A better out-of-the-box experience. Expect broader board support packages, stronger samples, and cleaner integrations across our EFR32 and Wi-Fi families, reducing setup friction and letting you focus on application code.
  • Security by design. From build-time hardening to secure boot and OTA workflows, we’ll keep partnering with the community to raise the bar on secure development for constrained devices.
  • Community investment. You’ll see more Silicon Labs engineers active in reviews, issue triage, and technical discussions, as well as increased participation in events, trainings, and working groups.

The Road Ahead for the Zephyr Project and Silicon Labs

Open source thrives when companies and communities pull in the same direction. By moving to Platinum, we’re doubling down on Zephyr’s core strengths of portability, composability, and a relentless focus on product-ready engineering. Whether you’re building a battery-powered sensor, a gateway, or a complex multi-protocol device, our goal is to make Zephyr on Silicon Labs the most reliable and developer-friendly path from prototype to production.

If you’re new to Zephyr, there’s never been a better time to jump in. And if you’re already shipping with Zephyr, we’re excited to support you with Silicon Labs hardware and tools. At the same time, our Simplicity SDK continues to provide a robust, full-featured path for developers who want a tightly integrated experience. Whether you choose SiSDK, Zephyr, or a combination of both, our goal is to give you flexibility and the best foundation to build what’s next. We can’t wait to build what’s next, together.
