Overview
The Z-Wave Protocol Controller (ZPC) is a Linux-based software application for controlling Z-Wave networks using a Silicon Labs Z-Wave Network Co-Processor (NCP).
ZPC provides the essential software capabilities required to build smart home hubs, security panels, residential gateways, and other Z-Wave controller products. Its MQTT-based application interface enables integration with customer applications and cloud services while ZPC manages communication with the Z-Wave network.
Z-Wave Protocol Controller (ZPC) Features and Benefits
| Features | Benefits | |
|---|---|---|
| Z-Wave network management | Create and manage Z-Wave networks, add or remove devices, and maintain network operation from a centralized controller. | |
| SmartStart® provisioning | Simplify secure device onboarding and provisioning for compatible Z-Wave products. | |
| Secure device inclusion | Support secure Z-Wave commissioning and communication using Z-Wave security mechanisms. | |
| Device discovery and interview | Automatically identify device capabilities and supported Z-Wave Command Classes. | |
| OTA firmware management | Upload, deploy, monitor, and activate firmware updates for supported Z-Wave devices. | |
| Network status monitoring | Monitor device availability and identify online and offline nodes. | |
| Failed-node management | Detect and remove availability and identify online and offline nodes. | |
| MQTT application interface | Connect gateway applications and cloud services through a standardized messaging interface. | |
| Persistent network storage | Preserve network and device information across application restarts. | |
| Broad device interoperability | Control common Z-Wave products such as switches, sensors, locks, thermostats, and lighting devices. |
Key Benefits of ZPC
Accelerate Time to Market - Start with an established Z-Wave controller implementation instead of developing core protocol, security, network management, and device-interview functionality from the ground up.
Simplify Application Integration - Use MQTT APIs to connect ZPC with local applications, gateway services, and cloud platforms.
Support Product Certification - Develop controller products with software designed around Z-Wave interoperability and certification requirements.
Reduce Lifecycle Management Effort - Use integrated network monitoring, failed-node handling, and OTA firmware updates to maintain devices after deployment.
Simplified Command Class Development - Automated code generation streamlines the implementation of new Z-Wave Command Classes.
Open and Extensible Development -Access ZPC source code, documentation, release information, and API references through Silicon Labs' development resources.
ZPC Architecture
ZPC separates application integration, device services, persistent storage, and Z-Wave network transport into distinct software layers.
Application Communication Layer
Provides MQTT handling and APIs for integration with gateway applications and cloud services.
Services Layer
Includes key controller services such as:
- SmartStart
- Device discovery
- Device interview
- Network monitoring
- OTA firmware management
- Command Class management
Persistent Storage
Maintains Z-Wave network information, discovered device attributes, and controller state.
Network and Transport Layer
Manages network operations, Z-Wave transmission and reception, S0/S2/S2v2 security transport, Multi-Channel communication, and the Z-Wave Serial API connection to the NCP.
