How To Choose Between CP2102N and CP2102C USB to UART Bridges

Adding USB to an existing UART-based product should be straightforward. But in reality, USB firmware, driver installation, component selection, and operating-system support can add work that has little to do with the product’s core value.

Silicon Labs’ CP2102 family addresses that problem with two different options. CP2102N gives designers more control over the USB implementation, including configurable device parameters and additional hardware features. CP2102C comes preprogrammed to use the standard CDC driver included with major operating systems, eliminating the need for a separate driver installation.

The choice comes down to a practical question: does the product need a configurable USB implementation, or does it need the simplest possible deployment experience?

Choose the CP2102N USB Bridge for Configuration Flexibility

CP2102N is the better fit when the USB interface needs to be tailored to the product.

Designers can use Silicon Labs’ GUI-based Xpress Configurator to set USB parameters and store product-specific information in the device’s configuration memory. CP2102N works with Silicon Labs’ royalty-free Virtual COM Port driver, allowing the device to appear as a standard COM port to existing host applications.

Depending on the package selected, CP2102N also provides:

  • Up to seven GPIOs
  • USB battery charger detection
  • Remote wakeup support
  • Packages as small as 3 mm × 3 mm
  • UART data rates up to 3 Mbaud

These capabilities make CP2102N a good choice when the design requires configurable USB identification, additional I/O, charger detection, remote wakeup, or more control over the host experience. The required VCP driver adds an installation step, but it also supports a more configurable implementation.

Choose the CP2102C USB to UART Bridge to Eliminate Driver Installation

CP2102C is intended for products where installation simplicity matters more than customization.

The device comes preprogrammed to use the USB Communication Device Class driver already included with Windows, macOS, and Linux. Users can connect the product and access it through existing COM-port applications without installing a separate Silicon Labs driver.

CP2102C includes:

  • Standard CDC driver support across major operating systems
  • USB-C compatibility
  • UART data rates up to 3 Mbaud
  • 4 mm × 4 mm and 5 mm × 5 mm package options
  • An integrated USB transceiver, oscillator, and voltage regulator
  • Crystal-less operation with no external USB resistors required

Removing the driver-installation step can simplify deployment and reduce support requirements, particularly for diagnostic equipment, portable devices, USB dongles, consumer accessories, and products used across a broad customer base.

Both Options are Built on the Same USB-to-UART Foundation

CP2102N and CP2102C both provide USB 2.0 full-speed connectivity, UART data rates up to 3 Mbaud, industrial-temperature operation, and a high level of integration. Both reduce component count and allow teams to add USB without developing USB firmware.

The main differences are configuration, hardware flexibility, and host deployment.

Product requirement

Recommended device

Why

Configurable USB parameters

CP2102N

Supports configuration through Xpress Configurator

No separate driver installation

CP2102C

Uses the operating system’s standard CDC driver

GPIO support

CP2102N

Provides up to seven GPIOs, depending on package

Battery charger detection or remote wakeup

CP2102N

Supports additional power-management features

Smallest package option

CP2102N

Available in packages as small as 3 mm × 3 mm

Simple deployment across major operating systems

CP2102C

Arrives preprogrammed for standard CDC operation

Start with the Deployment Requirement

Choose CP2102N when the product needs configurable USB behavior, additional I/O, or power-management features. Choose CP2102C when the priority is to connect through a standard operating-system driver without adding a separate installation step.

Both devices provide a direct path from UART to USB. The difference is how much control the design requires and how simple the finished product needs to be for the end user.
