How it Works
SmartStart begins with a provisioning list, which is a list of devices that will be joined to the smart network. The provisioning consists of three sets of descriptors: Inclusion data, such as the DSK and requested keys; product data such as manufacturer and specific product IDs; and network data such as status (pending, included, ignored, etc.). Additional data, such manufacturing date, lot number, and distribution point can be stored in the provision list as well. The provisioning list can be pre-loaded to the gateway, and is represented by a QR code.
Upon installation, a Z-Wave Z/IP Gateway can recognizes the devices and information that has been put on the provisioning list, as well as their status. When the QR code is read via smartphone, during installation and setup, the devices are joined to the network and follow the assigned functions and roles that have been pre-determined. For most installations, that’s all there is to it!
The actual QR code can be printed inside or outside the product box, and even on the device itself. This makes Z-Wave SmartStart especially handy for installing devices that typically don’t have their own on-off switches, such as motorized shades and smart light bulbs.The Z-Wave gateway also provides API’s for storing devices, and for extracting display information used in a user interface, such as icons. This helps providers of all kinds to retain their branded look and feel.
